Robber Fly with Prey - Promachus quadratus

Robber Fly with Prey - Promachus quadratus
Putnam County, Florida, USA
August 1, 2010
Loud buzzing when flying.

Moved from Giant Robber Flies.

I've never seen the species before,
but I believe this is Promachus quadratus.

quadratus vs. bastardii
I keep reading the descriptions in Hine (1911), but I'm still not sure why this isn't bastardii. Herschel's website suggests P. quadratus looks more like P. fitchii: "The species Promachus quadratus from FL GA LA has the same kind of yellowish cover on the abdomen and lacks any black hair but has a shorter white terminus cover."

thanks for this addition...
...and for your great job curating the asilid section!

Promachus
And may just be bastardii, Florida version I suppose.
