Springtails - Isotoma arctica

Springtails - Isotoma arctica
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
February 24, 2006
I found a bucket of dirty water at the school and these were in a little pile on the water. There were other ones on the water too....all content and walking on the surface. This is a neat little b-day present for me. What better way to spend the morning than taking 1G of bug photos! :)

I think these remain my favorite

Permission to use pictures
Hi Lynette, I hope to get your permission to use your pictures as illustrations at collembola.org. Credits and copyright clauses will be provided as usual.

Sorry Frans
You are welcome to use this image from bugguide, but I can't send you a larger file. I seem to have lost Feb.21-28. :(

Thanx for granting permission.

Isotoma arctica
That is: the largest elongate springtail. ID by Dr Kenneth Christiansen.

Great image, Lynette
Your equipment seems to handle springtails very well. Maybe you should keep your own bucket of dirty water at home and shoot springtails more often. They certainly are a riot of color and shape --- almost cartoony.

Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!
That certainly is a nice photo. When I have seen aggregations of springtails on water before they have always been the same species. It is neat to see all these guys chillin' together.
