Offer the Moth Your Finger......
.... they usually climb right onboard. Then transfer the moth to the tip of your nose. If it works the kids will go "WOW!!!" and want it on their noses. Have camera ready. John Himmelman does this in classrooms in Connecticut.

thanks a bunch
Mr.Perterson, here in laurel, md where we live there is an unusual amount of bugs and insects. I have never shown fear when it comes to dealing with insects because I want so much to awaken my kids curiosity. But sadly for what ever reason they seem to be born with a somewhat phobic fear of insects. From the tinniest mite to the picture of mothra I showed you they do a usain bolt to safty.
regards, earle

Do not be afraid
You can tell your kids that Luna Moths do all of their feeding when they are caterpillars. As an adult moth they do not feed and have NO sucking or biting mouth parts, and no stinger of any kind. They may try to bump into you if you are holding a flashlight, but it is no more scary than being bumped into by a kitten.
