katydid - Meconema thalassinum - male

katydid - Meconema thalassinum - Male
North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
August 2, 2010
Size: 2 inches
I think I am correct that it's a katydid and would love a specific identification.
such beautiful creatures.

mmm - I thought I moved it with that previous comment,
but I guess not. So, I'll just go ahead and take care of that now :0)

Moved from ID Request.

Correct
It is a last (probably 5th) instar male nymph. Looks like the antennae just extend beyond the left side of the photo.

that's wonderful. thank you!

thank you!

Meconema thalassinum?
I'm no expert, but this looks like an instar of Meconema thalassinum, known to be in the region. Looks about the right size, comparing with the nail head. Still has some changing to do (i.e. it's a nymph), based on the size of the wings; this may also account for the short-appearing antennae, unless they were lost in the depth-of-field in the photo. See for an example from Delta, and for another nymph.

You still need a more-informed opinion to be certain...

thanks so much, this does mak
