Bombyliidae or Syrphidae? - Sericomyia militaris

Bombyliidae or Syrphidae? - Sericomyia militaris
NE of Thief River Falls, Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge County, Minnesota, USA
August 2, 2010
Size: Length ~ 1.5 cm
My first guess, this was a Syprhid Fly, and my second guess, a Bombyliid. It's probably neither family! ;-) I could use some help getting this specimen into the right family (and genus, if the photo shows the kwy features). Thank you!

Like the patterns on that fly
Like the patterns on that fly. Great find.

Thank you! ;-)
It seems like every second fly I decide to videolog is one that I've never seen before! This one posed nicely for the camera. Most flies won't do that. ;-)

Syrphid
Looks like S. militaris.

Thank you!
Thanks! That's wonderfully helpful, Tom! I've never observed a syrphid fly like this one. ;-)
