"Checkered" White Butterfly - Burnsius oileus - Male
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Miami, Florida, USA
July 1, 2010
The Miami area appears to lack the presence of both the Common Checkered Skipper & the White Checkered- Skipper in Kaufman's regional maps.
Is there any way to tell the difference without capture/dissection?

If not, should I ID it as Common/White Checkered Skipper (Pygus spp.) ?

I believe this to be a male as it had just bred another!!

Tropical
No need if this is a tropical checkered skipper. It seems to have a white spot past the cell-end spot which the albescens/communis lacks. The male P. oileus is larger with a bluish tinge to the base of the wings.

Tropical Checkered-Skipper
Ray,

Now that you have pointed out the obvious... I see!
Wasn't expecting this uncommon find.

By the way, you can just see the end of the abdomen of the the other of the pair to the far left that was cropped away.

Thanks!
Bill
