Gold beetle - Lioligus nitidus

Gold beetle - Lioligus nitidus
Sitka County, Alaska, USA
July 2, 2006
This beetle was quite small - it's shown here on a zipper (size used on a school back pack) with a little bit of the teeth visible at the lower right. It reminded me of the Goldbug in the Richard Scary books I used to read when I was a kid.

fabtastic! new genus for the guide -- thanks a lot, Matt
Moved from ID Request.

happy to help
Thanks for the fast identification!

Doesn't seem like there's a lot of information on-line about these.

sweet
Matt,

You may want to elaborate on where (what situation) you found this individual. That is, unless you are going to publish something on it. For a lot of species very little is known and every little bit helps in understanding them.

BTW - awesome find.

old picture
As you can see from the date, I actually took this picture quite a while back. (I'm going through my natural history photos trying to get them better organized as well as trying to compile species lists of various groups for my area on my website wiki.seaknature.org )

I don't remember the precise details of finding it, but as best I recall, I noticed it on my backpack while stopped for a snack break while hiking. I was hiking in an river valley flood plain stand of old growth temperate rain forest. Vegetation was fairly typical for this area, Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis), Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), with understory shrubs including Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus), Blueberries (Vaccinium sp.), Rusty Menziesia (Menziesia ferruginea), as well others. Also, lots of bryophytes covering the ground and also as epiphytes.

I'll try to keep an eye out for this species again.

they keep low-profile
i don't think there's much info offline, either -- besides original descriptions and some general words about moss associations; Johnson's 1987 thesis must contain more specifics, but it has not been published
