Syrphid Fly? - Merodon equestris - Male
Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
February 25, 2006
Size: 0.5 inch
Indoors, at the same window for a couple days.
Resembles this Merodon equestris.

This is indeed a male Merodon equestris. If you found it this time of the year inside your house, it is very likely that it emerged out of a house plant. The larvae of this (European) species live in plant bulbs.
I will move the picture to the right place.

Thanks, Martin.
Thanks for the information, Martin. It's interesting to learn where the fly comes from. We have a lot of Amaryllis that summer outside; maybe it likes those bulbs.
