Unknown spider in my garden, there was a thick web (thicker than a regular house spider) around the area we found this spider - Araneus

We found this spider on a potato vine that I just planted beside our deck. The photo was taken in the middle of the day, hot weather - plus 33 Celsius. We came back an hour later and he had left, have yet to see the spider again. As you can see in the photo it is hairy or spiny looking, it did not move when I moved the branches around it. Hopefully someone can tell me more about this spider.

Orb weaver in the genus Araneus
Do you have a straight on dorsal image? Maybe A. saevus, but that's just a first guess.
