Caterpillar on Black Eyed Susan for ID - Eupithecia miserulata

Caterpillar on Black Eyed Susan for ID - Eupithecia miserulata
Green Lane, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 2, 2010
Size: Apprx 1"
I've checked my Peterson First Guides-Caterpillars, butterfly guide, and BG (Moths » Geometroidea » Geometrid Moths (Geometridae) » Larentiinae » Eupitheciini » Eupithecia???)- can't ID for certain but this looks pretty good. 83 deg. F, sunny, no breeze.

Can anyone recommend a simple yet really good caterpillar guide?

Perhaps Common Pug
It looks like a Common Pug (Eupithecia miserulata). Wagner states that the Common Pug accounts for more than 90% of the Eupithecia caterpillars that he finds.

Caterpillar Book
Check out Princeton Field Guides Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner. It's 500 pages, pretty much one caterpillar per page, with a large photo of the caterpillar and a smaller pic of the moth or butterfly it will become, and written text describing recognition, occurrence, common foodplants, and other notable info. You won't be disappointed!

Recommended book
This already paid for itself! I've ID'd more than 6 caterpillars.

Rec'd my book!
It is GREAT, thanks for recommending it.

Awesome book!
Just checked it out and its perfect for me - buying it today and many thanks for the ID. A thought occurred to me that buying Field Guides and putting them on Kindle or Nook to take in the field might be the "future" way to go. I don't own either one yet, but that would lighten the load.

Has anyone tried this?
