yep
looks like a mature male widow. now, as for which species, if the size was 1" or less it will be a mactans, which it looks to be anyway based on patterns/colors. remember, variolus males tend to be much bigger. mac males are the smallest. more info on males and sizes under my bio.

I think he is about 1 inch long. I say so because I captured the image with a Canon 50d using a 100 mm macro manually focused at true 1:1. Since the sensor is 22.3 mm wide and the spider looks to be exactly the length of the uncropped image, he is just under 25 mm or 1 inch in length.
