California Lady Beetle (Coccinella californica)? - Coccinella

California Lady Beetle (Coccinella californica)? - Coccinella
Big Basin RSP Redwood Loop Trail, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
December 19, 2009
Size: 1/4th inch?
We had, until 2010, ladybugs around the Redwood Loop for about 6 months out of the year, but this was a winter appearance, and we received no spring summer colonies this year. The one usually around the RWL had few spots, this was unusual as it had no spots.

In my full size photo, I can tell that the dots on the face are connected by a white line, making this the Coccinella novemnotata, 9 spotted (unspotted) Lady Beetle.

I am using this page as my reference;

Hard to tell without seeing the head.
I think (from the little bit of white on the pronotum I can see) this may be a Nine-spotted Lady Beetle (Coccinella novemnotata) spotless form. But, it may be a californica; the white marks on the head and a better view of pronotum would help.

Head views
Thanks. I've just recently learned that the head was very important, and these are photos from before then. I'll see if I can find any head views in other folders.
