Dimorphic Ground Beetle - Anisodactylus alternans - male

Dimorphic Ground Beetle - Anisodactylus alternans - Male
Old Mill pond area in Westwood, Lassen County, California, USA
July 20, 2010
Size: Body length 9mm
GrBet 028 - Sent to Peter W. Messer

Found this beetle, and the one linked below, under a cinder rock within the dried up mill pond area. Collected this species once before in 2005 - my notes from then are as follows:

"Oct 11, 2005: Old Mill pond area when all dried up - 20 or more black & brown ground beetles (although a few were all black). They seem to have little tunnels down under - they scattered when I overturned the rock - some down the tunnels. Saw some more under another rock nearby. Found in area that was previously underwater during the springtime, but was now covered in grassy vegetation."

I do now know if the dimorphic coloration is a male female characteristic.

Another interesting feature is two depressions within the lower part of the thorax.

the black one

Anisodactylus (Anadaptus) alternans (Motschulsky, 1845)
is confirmed by my physical examination of this female specimen that is now held in PWMC. Thank you Jim.

PWM taxonomic note inserted into the species info page:
Bousquet & Larochelle (1993: 14) and Bousquet (2012: 1033) established that Anisodactylus (Anadaptus) alternans (Motschulsky, 1845) is the synonym senior to Anisodactylus alternans LeConte, 1851; Anisodactylus nivalis G.H. Horn, 1880; Anisodactylus parvulus (Casey, 1914). The revision of subgenus Anadaptus by Noonan (2001) unfortunately missed Motschulsky's seniority. Otherwise, Noonan's 2001 key corrects the misplacement of A. alternans in Lindroth's 1968 key. Two colored morphs are sympatric: the bicolored morph and the less common dark morph.

Moved tentatively based on Peter's suggestion
i hope he'll be given an opportunity to see your catch, Jim

Moved from Ground Beetles.

Anisodactylus, subgenus Anadaptus,
at or near Anisodactylus nivalis. Several western species of Anadaptus occur in your area. Anisodactylus nivalis does indeed display color dimorphism (pale vs dark forms) but it is not related to sex. I am willing to examine your western carabid specimens to confirm species identities if you wish.

Question
Under the info tab for A. sanctaecrucis, it states that brownish elytra and a black forebody are characteristic. From what I can see, this species also fits that description. Am I missing something, or should that description for A. sanctaecrucis be erased?
