Black widow? - Latrodectus - female

Black widow? - Latrodectus - Female
Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia, USA
August 5, 2010
Size: 1/2 in to 3/4 in (body)
We found this spider in a tangled, cobwebby sort of web strung between a pair of shoes; when we tried to kill it, believing it to be a black widow, it ran under a shoe rack, where we discovered 20-30 small, spindly brown spiders- which we thought were its young. We could not photograph these because they scattered very quickly. The abdomen of this spider looks deflated, and it seems too large in comparison to the sizes given for black widows by the insect guide we own.
