call for Elateridae

Well,
what started as a simple request to get southeastern elaterids is blossoming into something bigger. The support has been overwhelming, with contributers from all over the country wanting to send voucher-ID'd specimens for BugGuide images and general reference.

So, for any of you who take images of click beetles (Elateridae) and would like to send specimens for ID, I'd appreciate it. My experience is limited to the southwest (mainly AZ) and the southeast, but am willing to tackle anything from the U.S. or Canada.

Please email me (address on my profile) if you'd like to contribute.

Let's get this large, yet difficult group, moving forward on BugGuide!

thanks!
Blaine

I've been collecting click beetles recently
Normally that's a group I don't target for my collection, but recently I've been trying to "take my medicine" and stop dodging groups that I've been avoiding.

So I have a bunch of unidentified, pinned specimens from SE Louisiana and Mississippi. I know people don't love to see pinned specimens on the guide, but I'll photograph and post them if it will help add new taxa.

Nothing wrong with showing pinned specimens on BugGuide.
As a taxonomist, I prefer to see carefully prepared photographs of dead/mounted specimens as compared to diagnostically-challenging field shots.

I completely agree with Peter...
...and would add that BG community has long outgrown that grumpy attitude towards mounted specimens as the site's function as visual guide gained more prominence

I'm glad to hear it.
As a collector, I've never had qualms about it, but I've tried to be respectful of those who disagreed by only posting pinned specimens for new taxa or diagnostically critical vantage points.

When I have time to get to the microscope, I'll photograph the heck out of my elateridae. I should add the disclaimer that I haven't even attempted to ID them, so it is likely that there is nothing especially novel among my specimens.

hey Mark
I send you an email about sending me voucher-ID specimens for Elateridae. Please let me know if you'd be interested (esp. if they cannot be identified by images).

What timing!
I just sent you a reply seconds ago. Now I'm going to get out my beetle boxes to see how much I actually have to share.
