H. convergens in Massachusetts
I apparently wasn't paying enough attention to the location the first time I looked at these - the only species that looks like this in Massachusetts is H. convergens. (Out West it's harder to tell!)

Range limit
This is the easternmost photo on BugGuide, at the west end of Massachusetts. Is it rare in New England?

distribution does vary
This is one of the widest-ranging species of lady beetle, covering the entire US "lower 48" and most of southern Cananda, but it isn't equally common everywhere in its range. It's hugely common in the west, where it gathers by the hundreds-of-thousands on mountaintops in winter, but I've never seen similar gatherings in the east. (Maybe the mountains just aren't high enough!)
