Rolled-winged Stonefly

Rolled-winged Stonefly
Saint Albans,Home/porch light, Kanawha County, West Virginia, USA
March 1, 2006
Size: 1/2 in.
In this photo I tried out another feature of my camera by changing it to black and white. With the natural color of this insect I think the result is more accurate. I also subjectively think there was some improvement in being able to see details.

Family ID
Mr. Fox-

Not sure whether you are just testing or are seeking family identification. In any event, you appear to have a Rollwinged Stonefly, also called a Needlefly, family Leuctridae. It appears that there is only one other photo of this family in the guide.

Re: Stonefly (one word)
Mr. Fox-

Don't have availability of keys to more detailed identification. However, I can tell you the following Leuctridae species reside in W. Virginia:

Leuctra alexanderi (Anakeesta Needlefly)
Leuctra duplicata (Atlantic Needlefly)
Leuctra ferruginea (Eastern Needlefly)
Leuctra rickeri (Spined Needlefly)
Leuctra sibleyi (Brook Needlefly)
Leuctra tenuis (Narrow-lobed Needlefly)
Leuctra truncata (Truncate Needlefly)
Megaleuctra flinti (Shenandoah Needlefly)
Paraleuctra sara (Appalachian Needlefly)
Zealeuctra fraxina (Ashcave Needlefly)
