Vespula - Vespula vidua

Vespula - Vespula vidua
Howell, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
August 7, 2010
While deep in the woods i found a vespula nest that had been dug up by some animal. I pulled a worker out of the comb and it looked like Vidua, but i dont think they have those dots on the abdomen.

Moved from Vespula.

Might be vidua
Compare to this aberrant male vidua:

V. acadica shouldn't have free spots on the abdomen, which this seems to show.

Vespula acadica
This is a melanic worker of the "forest yellowjacket" Vespula acadica.

Vidua
Your first guess wss correct, it is a vidua, they are quite distinctive.

Moved from ID Request.

A rare V.Vidua Male
with enclosed spots much as in Acadica
