Wandering larva - Onycholyda sitkensis

Wandering larva - Onycholyda sitkensis
Alameda County, California, USA
June 25, 2010
Size: ~18 mm
At about age 33 days, the larva left the blackberry leaves and toured the container. I then provided a mixture of compost and leaves for pupation in the same container. The larva remained visible on and off for about four days, often seen on the bottom of the transparent container. Then it disappeared, presumably into the pupation material. By August 9, no adult sawfly had resulted. Evidently, the larva had died.
