This is a tenative ID. I don't know of anything else it could be and the odds are you found a common species rather than one not listed in Townes' 1945 revision.

Thanks for the long haul, John. I'll try my best to get some shots with the characters you've laid out in mind next time I see one. The midges are flighty about the flash & they're just small enough & transluscent enough to really push the limits of my current setup.

Possibly Microtendipes
This might be a Microtendipes based on color, but color patterns like dark leg joints and bicolored abdomen tend to repeat around the tribe. Does this shot get any bigger?

Can you tell how many segments are in the antennae?

Flew away
before I got the dorsal. A ladybug walked into it.
