Darkling Beetle - Merinus laevis

Darkling Beetle - Merinus laevis
Hopkins Gap, Little North Mountain, Rockingham County, Virginia, USA
August 9, 2010
Size: 23 mm
This beetle was found on recently cut oak firewood. Based on BugGuide pictures and images from the Florida darkling beetle key I think this may be Merinus laevis, especially with the fine punctation of the elytra and the broad femora. Will await expert opinion though before placing it.

I agree with Merinus laevus, based on the criteria you mention.
