Tiger Beetle - Cicindela oregona

Tiger Beetle - Cicindela oregona
Venice Beach State Park, San Mateo County, California, USA
March 2, 2006
I was really excited to find this guy. It's my first Tiger Beetle, and a really pretty one at that. Found it flying around on a sand dune at Venice State Beach. I think it's Cicindela duodecimguttata (Twelve-Spotted Tiger Beetle). Any ideas?

oregona?
I'm no expert, but I think the middle strip fits: it has a high "knee." The specimens I've seen here (near Port Angeles, WA) vary in the completeness of the middle stripe, from a bar and a dot to a full stripe. The color varies depending on the angle of the light.

The dorsal shot may show the characteristic bristles on the inside edge of the eye. Does your original show that? Here's a page with more photos of oregona: http://www.eugraph.com/photos/insects/beetles/coregona

seems doubtful ..
Cicindela duodecimguttata is not listed in The Tiger Beetles of California - a couple look close to yours. See range map. Nice shot.

I dunno...
It has twelve spots in the proper locations, and save for C. oregona none look close to it, and C. oregona has the wrong habitat. This was on a coastal dune

many quite variable
Many subspecies recognized - see better list (still no Cicindela duodecimguttata). Consider C. senilis or maybe even one of the MANY subspecies of C. hirticollis?

Variability
After some more digging, I found several specimens of Cicindela oregona and found several that match in color to the ones I found today. I'd say it's the best match, so if nobody has objections, I'll move it to the guide
