Paragnetina sp.

This is probably an exuviae of Paragnetina immarginata (Say) (Perlidae). I can't quite decide if the markings on the legs include a longitudinal dark bar ~2/3 length of each femur, a diagnostic character for P. immarginata, or if there are 2 dark transverse bands, which would instead suggest P. ichusa Stark and Szczytko. Stark et al. (1998) contains pictures of the nymphs of P. immarginata, P. media, and P. fumosa but not P. ichusa or P. kansensis.

Perhaps someone more familiar with the eastern fauna will chime in. Beautiful shot, by the way.

Thanks, Brady. I have Brigham, Brigham and Gnitka on my bookshelf, and it lists media, kansensis, immarginata and fumosa only. ichusa probably is not known from N.C.

So it's likely P. immarginata

North American Stonefly List

Unfortunately, the information in Brigham, Brigham and Gnilka is a bit out of date. I've heard an effort is underway to revise or redo the book. In the meantime, for stoneflies, you might want to check this webpage for more up-to-date distribution information (http://plsa.inhs.uiuc.edu/plecoptera/validnames.aspx). This list has been migrating about the Internet for many years and older versions are still accessible (see the stonefly Internet Resources page here on BugGuide, for instance) so you have to be careful about the dates. The version I linked to should be the most current.

Having said that, Paragnetina ichusa has been reported from North Carolina. In fact, part of the type series was from NC. But I'm still leaning towards P. immarginata for your specimen.
