Giant Robberfly (Asilidae: Promachus or Diogmites)? - Promachus vertebratus

Giant Robberfly (Asilidae: Promachus or Diogmites)? - Promachus vertebratus
Turtle River State Park, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
August 11, 2010
Size: Length ~ 2-2.5 cm
This is the largest, most robust asilid I've seen here in the upper midwest. I photographed a mating pair, but will show individuals here as two separate images. I'm hoping there's enough detail to determine the species. My best guess at genus is either Promachus or Diogmites, but I'm probably way wrong. ;-) Thanks for any and all help!

Thank you, Herschel!
Thank you for sharing your expertise on this forum. ;-) Here's the video clip of this mating pair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6TTJjTos3g

Nice video
Had not realized there were that many insect videos on youtube.

Thank you, Herschel!
Yes. I think there is a rather small (but international) community of 'insect-interested' videographers who post regularly on Youtube. My interests in entomology is more behaviorally-oriented (and not too taxonomically technical), but I do hope that I don't grossly misidentify too many insects in my continuing efforts to rouse the larger community of Youtubers to the strange and wonderous world of arthropods. BugGuide.net has been a godsend for me! Candidly, a swell entomological curriculum awaits the individual who happens to stumble across BG. ;-)
