Size: 55 mm
I think this is the same species that I see flying in numbers over grassy areas, especially in late afternoon, during this HOT time of year. This critter was exposing maximum surface to the sun when it was 95F outside that morning.

The eyes are too small and far apart
This is something in Gomphidae. We'll check.

Oh, how interesting!
I noticed something different about its flight "gait" and now that you mention it, it reminds me of another gomphid I've seen.
