Editing photo

Before I knew that there was a suggested photo size, I uploaded several at high pixels. (I knew nothing about resizing). I have now resized some photos that are already on the guide. Should I and how would I exchange the photos? Add a photo, then delete the large one?

You can actually edit your original submission page
- just switch out the picture. That way comments are preserved and you avoid duplication of images. Select "edit" under your picture to get to the form you originally submitted.

Switch out?
Do you mean go to the edit page and put in the new pic under browse and it will change the original?

Yes.
Just browse to your resized image and all other details on the page will remain the same.
As to whether you should resize, that's debatable. Editors have the option of viewing shots at full-size, and occasionally it's helpful. On the other hand, it takes up more space on the server. You could just go with a smaller size from now on - the few you have already posted are just a drop in the BugGuide ocean!

Thank you
Yes, I just did it to one and it worked. Wish I wasn't such a dummy sometimes.

Sometimes lots of pixels is a good thing
If you have an image where the useful part of the image is still bigger than 560 pixels, you're better off uploading it at full resolution. Those with an editor flag on their account can see it in full resolution.

Although some of us with that flag are just "worker bees," there are experts like Eric Eaton and Phil Harpootlian who have been made editors so they can see full resolution (some of the amateurs are pretty sharp at IDs and some of the experts do lots of the work around here, so the "worker bee" vs "expert" categorization doesn't tell the whole story).

My advice: crop your photos down to the essentials, then leave it at whatever resolution you have. Sometimes when I have an image that's slightly out of focus, I'll resize it to the maximum resolution where the blurriness doesn't show- but not if it obscures useful details.

One exception came up recently: if there are small details close together that don't work well with BugGuide's automatic resizing, you might want to resize the image yourself so you can tweak it to come out better.

Oh my gosh....
I had no idea that only editors were able to see the full resolution photos!!!! Sorry!

Thank you
I'm not sure exactly what you said because I'm pretty new at this. Just the other day Lynnette helped me with my photo program. I just thought that "all" photos had to be a max of 560 pixels on the longest side. And I still don't know what the difference is except when I lower the pixels it makes some of my photos blurrier. LOL

560 size is important
only to space on the server. BugGuide will automatically downsize images to a maximum size of 560 pixels on one axis. It will never "upsize" an image to 560 pixels. So simply submit at 560 pixels or larger. Check your images for sharpness at a resolution of 72 ppi (pixels per inch) and an image size of 560x560 pixels. Image size and resolution are not the same!
Large size images are great for us editors; your dragonfly #41758 at 1714x1141 pixels looks fantastic on my 24" monitor (pretty damn good at 560 pixels, but WOW at 1714 pixels). So, keep 'em large - I guess not.

so
Tony, your last sentence means "I guess not" not to keep them large? And thank you for the compliment.
