Yes, it is a better place... This pic bothers me, because it looks very distinct and I feel like we should be able to put a name on it... and I mean a species name...I am sure we will, it is just a matter of time..

I think this is Eupeodes... o
I think this is Eupeodes... one of the more northern once... I do not know of any Melangyna with such large spots... the yellow margin on the thorax is strange, and so are the black hind legs and the orange front and middle legs... should be easy to ID, but I just do not know this species...(or genus for that)

Once again, you're ID's good.
I think these are tough to get to species; none here have made it. Generally speaking, shots showing the legs and shots showing the face can prove invaluable in species ID of syrphids. (Wing veins and pattern on the back are probably the two most important points, but you're already covering these well. Other contributors take note!)
