Numbers
138 species in 22 genera in North America. Many genera and species are waiting to be described.
1 subtribe in North America, Cochylina
Remarks
It is our understanding that Cochylini replaces Euliini and all species formerly in Cochylini are moved to the subtribe Cochylina, the only subtribe in North America north of Mexico.
Per Meltzer & Brown, 2014,
(1) "...Regier et al. (2012) revealed that Cochylini are a monophyletic lineage embedded within the larger Euliini and should be treated as the subtribe Cochylina until further evidence contradicts this proposed change in classification..."
Dr. Jason Dombroskie explains, "The Cochylini form a nice tight monophyletic group, however they nest right in the middle of what is currently defined as the Euliini rendering them paraphyletic. So there are two possible solutions. 1) Keep Cochylini and name each separate lineage of the Euliini as a separate tribe. 2) Lump them together as a single tribe and retain Cochylina as a subtribe. The latter was chosen because the phylogeny of the Euliini is largely unknown. And because the name Cochylini is older than Euliini, the Cochylini retains priority. So all former Euliini now belong in the Cochylini." - Steve Nanz (2015)
A note about "Hodges Numbers":
Bob Patterson of the Moth Photographers Group came up with a different version of the numbers in the Hodges' 1983 North American lepidoptera checklist for this tribe, so there are two sets of numbers: the real Hodges numbers from the checklist, and MPG's "Hodges numbers", which are different. Although BugGuide primarily uses the MPG numbers, we have tried to give the original Hodges numbers as well.
