Black-toed Meloid - Epicauta nigritarsis

Black-toed Meloid - Epicauta nigritarsis
Balcones Canyonlands NWR, Travis County, Texas, USA
August 13, 2010
Size: 8-12mm (various ind.)
I assume this is an Epicauta sp. Can it be narrowed to species with these photos? Note antennal segment ratios: 1st ~= 3rd, 2nd distinctly shorter. These were suddenly common at porch lights during the week of Aug. 9-13.

ID details?
I don't have ready access to the technical refs listed on the guide page for this species. Could you or someone briefly recap the distinguishing characters of this species from other similar ones? (I'm always interested in learning *how* to identify these things, not just the answer to "What is it?")

Thanks in advance.
