Hemileuca eglanterina

Hemileuca eglanterina
Rainier, Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 7, 2010
Size: ca. 2.5"
Caterpillar made its way across four feet of pavement in an amazingly short period of time with an agenda which became apparent as soon as it reached the edge. There it burrowed quickly beneath a clump of dry, mowed and matted grass, raising and lowering a circle of material approximately four inches in diameter.

Thanks!
Thank you both for correcting my tentative identification of Lophocampa argentata. And yes, I knew to steer clear of the spines.

Watch out for those irritating spines!

Yes Hemileuca
More specifically, this looks like Hemileuca eglanterina eglanterina.
