You have found Platystethus rather than Bledius, I believe this species is cornutus, an introduced species.

Do you know if Platystethus spp. (or any other rove beetles, for that matter) burrow as Bledius spp. do? I think there were Bledius-like burrows in this general area.

Also, are there any details that would help to confirm the species? All of my shots are more or less dorsal, but I can crop to zoom in on a particular feature if that would be useful.

Hello Charley,

I made a mistake in naming your photo, this is actually P. degener, an introduced species. Platystethus is known to burrow in dung but your species is known from habitats near water. It may burrow into decaying vegetation or similar, and perhaps even sand. It's possible you also had Bledius in the area.
