The book says the Green-striped's blue on S2 is deeply cleft or split. I have always had trouble (not just with this species) counting 10 segments from my images. Is there an S10 that has no blue? If yes, then counting backwards, I can see the split blue on S2. If no, then it seems S3 is the lowest number with split blue.

Wrong view of S2
Hi Marty,

The blue patch on S2 which is the key to separating Green-striped from Canada Darners is on the *side* of its abdomen, not the dorsal surface. It cannot be seen from this angle. Your other photo of this dragon actually does show it, but not very well, as the blue patch in question has some shadows across it which cut into the clarity of the view a bit. It does look pretty good for Green-striped though. If you have a copy of the Massachusetts ode guide, it has diagrams that show it very well. Or you can check out
this photo by Dave Czaplak which has a pointer indicating the S2 blue patch so you know what to look for.
