Explanation of Names
Pachygronthidae Stål 1865
from Pachygrontha 'thick fist'
2 subfamilies, with 7 spp. in 3 genera in our area and ~80 spp. in 13 genera total(1)(2)
Hemelytra distinctly punctate, at least on the clavi. Central area of scutellum usually not separated from posterior edge of pronotum by a distinct transverse groove. Abdomen at least as long as thorax. Apex of corium and membrane not extending past abdomen. Clavi with median commissure behind scutellum either obliterated or absent and eyes not enlarged (Phlegyas) or long and present (Oedancala). Fore femora thickened and armed with spines (3).
