Caterpillar -- Pupa - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Caterpillar -- Pupa - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis
Sewanee, Franklin County, Tennessee, USA
August 18, 2010
Size: 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 in long
I watched this caterpillar slowly work its way to a cosmos bud, attach itself, and close the opening of the pupa. I do not know who it will become and would love to.

This is an evergreen bagworm larva. "Pupa" is the name for the inactive stage between larva and adult--what the larva is carrying is a portable case that will eventually function as a cocoon when it pupates.

Thank You So Much!
I love the idea of the larva carrying around his own personal protective case. Gives new meaning to "bag"worm. Thank you so much!

Bagworm Moth
Family Psychidae...would like to know it's exact name though?

Thanks!
I was so hoping it was going to be a butterfly! Perhaps someone else will know?
