Ergates spiculatus? - Trichocnemis spiculatus

Ergates spiculatus? - Trichocnemis spiculatus
Long Ridge OSP, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 20, 2010
Size: 70 mm (body only)
While on a night hike, we came upon this beetle on a cut bank in the forest (mostly mixed deciduous hardwood). It patiently sat where it was as we took photos. At first we thought this was Prionus, but the spiny margins of the pronotum look more like Ergastes. And the antenna segments are more cylindrical than conical (though maybe female Prionus are that way).
