LRB (little round beetle) - Cercyon praetextatus

LRB (little round beetle) - Cercyon praetextatus
Elkland, Missouri, Dallas County, Missouri, USA
August 21, 2010
Size: 1.5 mm
I'm thinking "Scirtidae?" These have been abundant at my mercury vapor light every weekend this summer. The white markings on the elytra are distinct, but I don't see this pattern on others posted here.
This was my first attempt at focus stacking using CombineZM. Each stack is 4 pictures, creeping the focus rail downward with my MP-E 65. Clearly I need a lot more practice.

Moved tentatively
Moved from Cercyon. I don't see dorsal microsculpture, which would exclude C. connivens. Color pattern and slightly visible reddish spots on vertex of head indicate this is likely C. praetextatus, a common eastern species.

Looks like C. connivens
but being from Canada, I'm not familiar with the southeastern US fauna so it's just a guess :)

Moved
Hydrophilidae: Cercyon sp.

Moved from ID Request.

Hydrophilidae
Brad - thanks! These little guys are flying about 1/8 mile from my pond, probably.
