Biting fly - Silvius gigantulus

Biting fly - Silvius gigantulus
Big Basin Redwoods SP, Slippery Rock area, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
July 11, 2009
Size: 5/8"?
This repentant biting fly was quite cooperative after he hit the ground, and I hadn't squished it in the act of getting it to stop biting me.

Biting Fly
This fly is Silvius gigantulus (Loew). The spotted eyes are characteristic of the Genus Silvius.

Colorful Eyes usuall = Deer Fly
They have gorgeous eyes, but ouch! Though we don't have that species, our Deer Flies can be VICIOUS. Having thick hair and wearing a hat helps, but boy are they persistent! I'm sure someone can give you a specific species.
