What a nifty carabid!
I figured you'd be out all day yesterday, Tom, and was looking forward to seeing your arthropod treasures. This one is an absolute beauty!

Agonum octopunctatum
I just found a match to this beetle on ITIS.

Close anyway
I don't see the strong medial crease in the pronotum and the punctures are not evenly spaced as they are in yours.

Maybe real close
Don Chandler emailed me, saying he agreed with the id. I'm dropping off the specimen to him later this week, so he can give it a good look over, before adding it to the UNH collection.

Great!
Did he say it was a new addition to the collection?

He didn't say
if it was a new addition, only that it's an uncommon species that he would like for the collection.

Agonum octopunctatum; uncommon??
I find it strange to here(see) that comment. In the the riverine habitats in central Vermont where I lived for 25yrs, I could go out along the river, overturning rocks and logs, and easily come up with 100 a day. Indeed I have vials full of them in alchohol.

I guess it depends on where you look.
I have yet to find one in southern New Hampshire.

Thanks Jim
I hope this is a good sign of things to come. I found all my beetles under about 3 rocks. The only actively moving bugs in the open were flies, stoneflies, and spiders.
