Eastern Washington Columbia Gorge Large Moth - Hemileuca hera

Eastern Washington Columbia Gorge Large Moth - Hemileuca hera
Sun Lakes, Grant County, Washington, USA
August 21, 2010
Size: 3 X2
This moth was alive and resting with wings folded on a sage bush near the Dry Falls area of Sun Lakes, Columbia Gorge. He was quite unafraid of me and allowed me to handle him and move hiim to photograph him well, then he flew away. His coloring and textures were really striking. I am interested in what kind of moth he was

Male?
It must be a male, judging by those feathery antennae.
