Catocala Moth -
Catocala myristica
Eddie Jones Park, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 13, 2010
Size: about 2 inches
Catocala moths seem to be very similar. To me this looks most like Catocala habilis 8778. Is this correct? I did not see the underwing pattern.

do think this is myristica. It's very similar to the one's we determined were myristica here:

Also in an area where nutmeg hickory should occur.

Agreed
I created a
myristica
species page with pertinent info and moved to there.

I like it
I think you've nailed it. The reniform spot and thicker, black lower portion of the PM line looks good for myristica.

This definitely
appears
to be a pale
robinsonii
, so I went ahead and moved it, but I'm leaving an asterisk here because I still want to look into this again given that there are hardly any examples of quite this pale of
robinsonii
. There are some immaculate forms of
angusi
which give me pause, and it has been recorded in northernmost parts of LA - where you are - so I could be wrong with this ID.
