Unknown Large Hopper - Pentagramma douglasensis
Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, USA
August 2, 2010
Size: 8 mm
There are two different hoppers here that appeared at my lights. Although one appears lighter, it was the same size and I believe they're the same species.

Pentagramma variegata
This genus feeds on the very tall rushes (Scirpus validus) that inhabit the edges of ponds. Two species occur in your area, separable by color. The darker species, shown here, is a new state record for IA although it has been found in surrounding states (IL, MN, MO, SD) and occurs transcontinentally in Canada.
