mosaic darner - Aeshna tuberculifera

mosaic darner - Aeshna tuberculifera
Ponemah Bog, Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 29, 2010
Finally caught one! Many of these circle a pond in a bog. Though the bog was pretty dry because of a huge heat wave. I have plenty more views if needed.

Moved from Darners.

Black-tipped?
My field guide for Massachusetts(1) gives Aeshna tuberculifera as the most likely species based in part on the small "flag" on the top of the straight front stripe on the side of the thorax. A. umbrosa would be next but that tends to have prominent dark margins around the stripes. They can also be distinguished by where females oviposit, and the book notes that A. tuberculifera males fly higher than most darners.
