Another species of pyrochroid? - Dendroides canadensis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA

Size: about 21 mm
Found under bark on deciduous log along with many Den*droides cana*densis larvae in fairly mature forest. Its dark freckles or blotches make me think it might be a different species of pyrochroid. otoh, perhaps it is D. cana*densis with a skin condition. There are nine species on the New Hampshire checklist

Dendroides canadensis
I asked Dan Young, U. of Wisconsin, to take a look, and he says this one "another Dendroides canadensis larva. The 'freckled' or 'blotched' appearance is something I've seen before, but I do not know the cause or whether such larvae fail to complete development."

In my endeavor to rear this larva I might be able to answer the latter, although failure to mature could be due to any number of factors.
