On log in recently cut woodpile within montane coniferous forest. These guys are impressive. Note the white scutellum. I'm presuming this is subspecies oregonensis, as that's the only lower rank M. scutellatus taxon listed in Evans & Hogue(1) and the California Beetle Database.

Also visible at lower right is a festive-looking buprestid compadre of the Sawyer.

Hi Aaron, the picture of the buprestid is a little distant, but I would think its another Phaenops lecontei. They certainly were abundant that day.
