Small Squaregill Mayfly - Caenis - male

Small Squaregill Mayfly - Caenis - Male
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
May 29, 2005
Hundreds of these tiny mayflies were attracted to our back porch lights. ID based on others in the guide.

Male imago
Eye size is of no help in determining gender in Caenis, but the long tails distinguish the males. The male abdomen is usually paler and slightly more slender than the female abdomen. The malformed right wing of this specimen is an interesting anomaly.
