Large black and blue dragonfly - Aeshna tuberculifera - Female
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
August 28, 2010
Size: About 8-10cm long
Very common large dragonfly in Nova Scotia, nearly every pond has them. The blue color is pretty unique, nothing else like it around here.

female Aeshna tuberculifera
Nice pic of a female Black-tipped Darner (Aeshna tuberculifera). Check those darners carefully! There are other Aeshna that look similar to this at a glance.

Darner
Darner (Aeshnidae), probably Aeshna. There are many similar species and you might have more than one in your area. Pay attention to shape of stripes on side of thorax. In my area straight stripes with just a little "flag" on the back of the top of the forward stripe is most common on Aeshna tuberculifera(1).
