Orange County Bee Fly Archives: Is this Geron calvus? - Geron

I think I have several of this species and am trying to find out what it takes to ID them to species.

Moved from Geron.

G. calvus is part of the subgenus Empidigeron, which can be identified by the characters given here. Since it's the only northeastern species in the subgenus, it's easy to identify to species, but in the southwest there are several species and I can't identify them. This particular fly is in the nominate subgenus, members of which are not identifiable without dissecting them.

Moved from Bee Flies.

Subgenera
Do you think it's worth dividing the rest of the images into subgenera? How many are identifiable to subgenus?

Subgenera
Done. I could identify almost all of the images identified with reasonable confidence.

Thanks much, Joel
Exactly what I needed.
