Unknown Caterpillar - Eumorpha pandorus

Unknown Caterpillar - Eumorpha pandorus
Powhatan County, Virginia, USA
September 5, 2010
Size: 2-3 inches
We found this caterpillar on 5 September in the morning on the vines of a grape vineyard. We thought it looked similar to the swallowtail family but could find no match for the large hood, single eye-spot on the tail and paisley shaped spots on the sides. It swings it's head side to side as a defense mechanism.
