Old shelf fungus larvae - Bolitotherus cornutus

Old shelf fungus larvae - Bolitotherus cornutus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 18, 2006
Size: up to 15 mm
In my continuing quest for Bolito*therus larvae (only because I know they eat shelf fungi) I hacked open some very old, cracked, dark specimens, expecting nothing. I found some very healthy larvae of several types inside, including two obvious beetle species. This species appears to be large enough to be a Bolito*therus. I should be able to rear one or several from the larvae I collected.

guess you are right!
Hi Jim,

these ones are Tenebrionid larvae. Those of the species feeding in concealed microhabitats lack the strong chitinization otherwise characteristic in the family.

cheers, Boris
