Xylocopa? - Xylocopa virginica - male

Xylocopa? - Xylocopa virginica - Male
Archbold Biological Station - Lake Placid, Highlands County, Florida, USA
September 6, 2010
I have been trying to get better shots of Xylocopa virginica krombeini and found some likely suspects this weekend. Of course, they could also be X. micans, Blueberry Bees or any of the other bees I have thought were likely suspects in the past! These were located in an area of Archbold Biological Station where goldenrod, partridge pear, and liatris were all blooming in the same area. There were bumble bees working on the partridge pear but these carpenter bees were working on all three flowers. I did not observe any of the "territory guarding" behavior from the males, they were busy pollinating along with the females. This series of shots is one specimen, I have shots of one other male and two female specimens I will be posting as well. I am marking it as male, I believe the white "nose" distinguishes that, please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!

Yes!
Thank you Dr. Ascher, I was afraid I would have to abandon the camera for a shotgun before I ever managed to find one holding still.
